Mekong Delta urged to restructure agricultural sector
(Mard - 31/7/2013) - Head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Comission Vuong Dinh Hue has stressed the urgent need to promote the restructuring of agriculture for strong and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta.
Working with the Southwestern Region Steering Committee (SRSC) in Can Tho city on July 29 on the performance of its tasks in the first half of the year and orientations for the second half, Hue said he agrees with the committee’s proposed plan to restructure the agricultural sector.
He urged the SRSC to work closely with his comission in doing this job and setting up specific mechanisms and policies to develop the region, especially Phu Quoc Island, in the coming time.
Hue also asked the committee, regional sectors and localities to take measures to solve farmers’ difficulties, saying that they need to further promote agricultural products to consumers nationwide and carry out programmes to prevent post-harvest loss.
The SRSC also proposed that the commission raise capital provision for the region’s key projects that are expected to help cope with climate change and reduce risks for farmers.
According to the committee’s report, the region saw a stable economic growth in the first six months of 2013. However, its agricultural and aquatic production still suffers difficulties as the price of farming products falls and enterprises are unable to access sources of capital
